Simplifying the ADOM UI...

Hi everyone!

In our continuing quest to simplify ADOM we today have gathered a long list of issues with the goal of simplifying ADOM more for new players. You can find it here: http://www.adom.de/forums/projectmilestone.php?milestoneid=8

And now we are looking for more input - but the goal is not to refine the UI for expert players and longtime fans - we know that there is a ton of proposals to fine-tune the UI even more for people expertly battling Chaos for a long time. Quite to the contrary we would like to unexperienced players, casual players and newcomers to the roguelike genre more favours. We have made several attempts in the past and want to continue to evolve the UI.

Thus we'd be very grateful for comments on the issues listed in the milestone above. If you have new or other ideas please add issues to our issue tracker and post a link in the comments below for us to review, so that we can decide whether to include your issues in that milestone or not.

Thanks for your continuing support!
Thomas & Team ADOM

P.S.: Naturally in the background we are working on finishing lots of new content. Stay tuned for that, too!

  1. If the movement cost system still works the same way that it used to, it might be worth the work to put in some sort of UI element that makes it intuitive up-front as to what is going on, and how different class/items interact with it, along with the advantages and disadvantages of doing so.

  2. Likewise, its not obvious up-front that the tactics system exists, much less how useful it can be. I havent actually played the game in quite some time, but I will check out the most recent build and see what I can see. Thank you for the game Thomas and co. It's crazy to see this game still be loved so much after so long. Keep up the awesome work!

  4. Has there been any more thought put into giving the inventory system and talent system some more love? Ravenmore had an interesting start with this for the talents

and I bet Adom would certainly benefit from a paperdoll UI that many roguelikes currently have (i.e ToME, Dungeonmans, CoQ to name a few), especially if the big goal is to be newbie friendly.

A UI improvement like this could also be put towards keeping track of other things (i.e weapon skills, corruptions. Maybe Ravenmore has gotten some great ideas for this kind of thing.

Edit: Also sorry for the repost, but I wanted to fix a glaring error lol

    3. http://www.adom.de/forums/project.php?issueid=4151 is not an "Ease of use UI" bug but it will be fixed for the next release (or rather: it's variants). It's a variant of the bug in 4151. This problem occurs whenever you use up an item.

  8. Hello!

Well, this may be an unwelcome post, but... I've played rogue-likes since 1998 or so when I was a teenager. I probably played ADOM at some point back then, but Angband was my game and it was hard to move away from it.

A few years ago, I started playing TOME on steam and it's been my go to for a while--I put in a couple dozen hours every few months.

I haven't played ADOM recently! I would like to. I'm happy to see it on steam, but I'm poor and broke, so haven't had the cash to pick it up yet.

That said, if that could be worked around, I'd be happy to give ADOM a try, while keeping a specific eye on the UI and interface for clarity.

I understand this is rather bold and rude of me to ask, but I understand if you don't want my input. :) That's fine! I totally understand!

If you are interested, however.. My email is Jenetikitty@ that gmail.com place!

(also, if you delete this, I also understand :) )

    Have a wonderful day :)
