ADOM R59 available as a public release
Directly on the heels of ADOM R58 (version 1.15.0) follows ADOM R59 (version 1.15.1).
We messed up the public release by introducing a bug due to an incomplete deactivation of the achievements system. This bug has been fixed and you now are free to go and play ADOM R59 with its awesome slew of new features!
For prerelease testers and Steam beta users nothing has been changed as the bug only applied to the public version (so you can and will continue to play R58 for the time being).
Find all the details in yesterdays post and enjoy the game. IndieDB has been updated first and all the other sources will be up to date within 24 hours (so many binaries to upload - we need to rethink our strategy there ;-) ). And here's the shortest change log ever ;-) Let us know what you think!

If you get a "no mirrors" error, you can log in to the site (register if you don't have an account) to get a mirror without any problems.
ReplyDeleteThe problem should go away after IndieDB finishes processing the upload.
Have fun!
Oh, and yes, registering at IndieDB is free ;) and it only takes a second.
DeleteThere's an interesting bit of feedback from a new player here:

I think it highlights a problem with the releases only being tested by veterans, with many of the potential interface problems being "invisible" to those of use who are so used to the system.
I would suggest you consider making the game available as Early Access in Steam. Make it clear this is for final testing/polishing/tweaking based on a wider demographic of users. It can give a bit of cashflow for further development, whilst providing some all-important feedback from new players who will spot things us old guard just can't see.
Fact is that the remaining funds from crowdfunding will be used to implement the remaining features promised. There just was no budget for endless UI optimizations... as much as we would love to. Sadly all members of team ADOM besides me have a real life and need to earn their food and many of the optimizations requested are not in my scope (as they e.g. require changes and additions to NotEye I just can't do).
DeleteWe have been thinking about Steam Early Access but (a) it seems to have a bad taste with parts of the audience and (b) early access only makes sense if their is significant income to allow more development by my compatriots.
I also have been thinking about Patreon in order to fund stuff that is not in the scope of the crowdfunding campaign (and just directly route any income to the other members of Team ADOM) but I'm somewhat concerned about getting a bad reputation for trying to get more money while not having finished all stuff from crowdfunding.
So it's a somewhat unlucky situation.
Do you have a 'day job' in addition to the lucrative [ (-; ] ADOM racket?
DeleteBut earnestly, software is a tough business, and I hope folks reading here know that the magic going on is often a labor of love. Perhaps the most helpful thing you can do to aid T.B. is to submit quality bug reports.
Early Access has a bad reputation for the many bad games on it, but for roguelikes it really makes a lot of sense. Roguelikes have been doing the long, open development cycle for decades. Caves of Qud and KeeperRL are both in Early Access at the moment and I've seen few negative comments about them. It definitely helps with keeping the game sustainable (ie drawing in income) whilst improvements are still being made. And it would draw in much more money than Patreon.
DeleteOkay... But what about ADOM II? It's been over 2 years since last news on that matter (actually it's closer to 3 years now, I think, but no difference at this point). Is it dead? And will probably stay that way for a rather indefinite period of time?
ReplyDeleteWe are focussing 100% on ADOM. We have to fight real life every day to progress with that so ADOM II sadly - despite initial other plans - currently is completely out of scope.
DeleteWhen can we pre order on Steam? :)
