Sometimes I love my child too much...

My child being ADOM II in this case. I spent the whole evening going through the bug lists in the official bug management tool. And again and again I fail to zip past minor issues before releasing a new version. Which costs days. But I can't bear the idea of my child being covered with warts that easily could have been removed. Independent of "release early, release often" and all that.

But now...

...I'm finally happy with the state of the list. The remaining bugs either require technical support I currently do not have available (e.g. two monitors and Ubuntu Linux), are truly strange crash bugs I so far cannot reproduce or relate to the incorrect weapon skill training with one handed and two handed spears. Ok, there are some more, but they right now don't bother me either.

Since I either can't reproduce the remaining bugs or I am too lazy to fix these minor irritations right now (like the spear skill thing - which is surprisingly difficult in a game with arbitrary skeletal structures for beings as counting which hands are used for what happen is not totally trivial) I'm now doing my official final tests.

Which means that I am going to try to play ADOM II 0.2.4 for a couple of hours to see if I encounter any more obvious problems. Then I will run a final test on the Windows machine of my wife and the release should be ready. Which means that with a bit of luck tomorrow evening might see the release of ADOM II 0.2.4. After 0.2.4 I probably will be doing one final release in the 0.2.x line in a week or two after all major bugs have been located and I could move myself to fix a lot more of the bugs on the issue list. I'd really love to start 0.3.x development without any open bug but the strangeness of some of the things makes this highly unlikely.

ADOM II 0.2.4 will bring hundreds of changes and additions, some large, some small. Corruptions, the full King of the Orcs story line, revised key bindings, new monsters and items, moving armies, sieges, army encounters in the wilderness, a completely revised hunger system, rewritten shopkeeper behavior, fixes for all known major bugs and many minor bugs, etc. are just the proverbial tip of the iceberg. I'm very much eager for feedback and I just hope that nobody finds a serious bug within minutes. But if that were the case, ADOM II 0.2.5 might be the fastest release ever ;-)

Stay tuned!

  1. Looking forward to it---you've got a good progress flow going of late that bodes well for this release and tidying up .2.x and .3x beyond in the near term. Keep at it on the hopes for a b-day release of the big show, I half suspect you might well surprise yourself on how quickly some of the later developments will pan out with your going through all this painful wrangling so early on to get a wiser foundation than ADOM had.
