Professional abilities coming to JADE...

To get some distraction from the "King of the Orcs" story arc (which currently is tedious to implement since it's nothing but hard content work) I allowed myself to get sidetracked once more. Right now I am implementing profession abilities in JADE.

In ADOM each class gained specific abilities at levels 6, 12, 18, etc. In JADE each profession (what was called a class in ADOM) now also gains specific abilities at certain levels.

In JADE a class gains a professional ability at levels 1, 3, 6, 10, 15, 21, 28, 36, 50, 75 and 100 (way to go, especially considering the fact that you can multi-class ;-) ).

I have just started to add this stuff to the existing professions as it is interesting to do right now and would be tedious to do much later on - so why wait, especially since it adds a nice touch to the current non-magical, non-missile professions.

This morning I added professional abilities to commoners which are:
  • double carrying capacity at level 1
  • requires 50% less nutrition at level 3
  • +3 to perception at level 6
  • +3 to toughness at level 10
  • the ability to select valuable herbs more effectively at level 15
  • the ability to turn corpses into iron rations at level 21
  • +6 to strength at level 28
  • +6 to willpower at level 36
  • suffers only 50% of the effects of corruption at level 50
  • gain a +100 hit point bonus at level 75
  • gain a +25 PV bonus at level 100
Obviously everything starting with level 28 is pretty heroic and things start to become legendary with level 50. For JADE 0.2.3 I will add professional abilities for the current four professions and each future release providing new professions also will include a full range of exciting professional abilities.

  2. Suddenly, becoming a commoner looks appealing... I doubt anyone will NOT take at least one level of commoner, double carrying capacity is a very nice bonus. Similarly level 3 will be critical to trolls... hmmm, *plans some character builds*.

  5. I also love these sidetracks, although I'd also like to get 0.2.3 soon so that my items don't disappear from time to time :)

    By the way, I like how this post confirms that there will still be corruption in JADE, I wasn't 100% sure about that.

  6. Argh, not the bloody iron rations! Let them make them into a new form of packed rations that are 10% the weight or something.

  7. The only thing I don't like in this specific profession is that any competitive character requires its first abilities, so everyone tries to get them; it will surely get boring after 15 plays.

  8. Perhaps have a limits in place so that if you have any level of Commoner, for instance, you can't take on a major quest line that involves a royal family. They simply won't speak to a commoner.

    Something like that might make people think twice about doubling carrying capacity..

  9. By the time you're level 21, is food really such a problem that the ability to make it is useful? I know one of the professions in ADOM had that ability (farmer, IIRC), but I never really played farmers to that level, so I can't say for sure.

  10. Will it be so hard as to making at least a pair of class-specific abilities for choosing at the aforementioned levels?
    Customization is wonderful, and having had a vast experience in homeruling DnD3.5e into almost a new system (I know it's bad to compare DnD and ADOM/JADE, but I can't help myself) I'd take into consideration that having "alternate class features" is great.
